Comments on 2007: The Year in Drug-eluting Stents
A Letter to Colleagues from:
Dr. Donald S. Baim, M.D.
Executive Vice President, Chief Medical and Scientific Officer
Keith D. Dawkins, M.D.
Senior Vice President, Associate Chief Medical Officer, Boston Scientific
January 16, 2008
In the fall of 2007, we celebrated the great achievements and memory of Andreas Gruentzig MD, who pioneered Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), the procedure that continues to save millions of patients around the world.
2007 also was a watershed year for PCI as a handful of studies called into question the utility of PCI as well as the safety of drug-eluting stents (DES).
But it was at TCT 2007 that we realized there was more to this story. Numerous studies demonstrated equivalent overall safety of DES and re-affirmed a 50 percent reduction in the need for repeat revascularization compared to bare metal stents when used in accordance with the directions for use.
In a year-ending letter, Boston Scientific’s Donald S. Baim, MD and Keith Dawkins, MD, reviewed the events and data that took us from trying times to a future filled with opportunity.
